AN INSUFFICIENT RESPONSE - CARLOS BARRADAS
Carlos Barradas is a Portuguese photographer currently living and working in Madrid, Spain. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology as well as a MA in Contemporary Photography.
His entire body of work engages with the concept of ambiguity. Barradas positions his photographs in a liminal state - an anthropological concept that refers to an intermediate phase or condition in a given rite of passage. Open for interpretation, his photographs become a receptacle in which people deposit their narratives.
In his series "An Insufficient Response" - of which title comes from Luigi Ghirri's famous Aperture text “Kodachrome” - Barradas continues his ongoing interest in ambiguity. The photographs he creates, transform into a habitable space, where emotional statuses, memories, and social and cultural values come into play, defining one's interpretation of the image. In other words, Barradas creates somewhat incomplete photographs that are finalised by the one who is watching.
For the above project - inspired by cinema, music, and literature - Barradas expanded his visual practice by the use of text. By adding a layer of fictional writing he hopes to expand the meaning and complexity of his work.
He is currently working on finalising a long-term project ‘’Ferry Tales” that he hopes to conclude in early 2021.
